Avoid using any form of food to alleviate emotions as this could lead to weight gain and even obesity over time.

Do you find that you or perhaps a friend constantly turns to some type of food as a source of comfort or relief? Do you use food to alleviate emotions? If so, better be careful, as this could lead one to becoming overweight.

Common psychological conditions

Two very common psychological conditions that are experienced by many woman (and men too) are loneliness and depression. Dealing with either or even both of these conditions can be a very difficult journey for some people. Bear in mind that others may not be as fortunate to be surrounded by loving and caring family or friends who have their best interests at heart.

Don’t use food to alleviate emotions

It can therefore be relatively easy for a lonely or depressed person to turn to food for comfort. Odds are that these foods are high in calories, whether from sugar or fat. Either way, they provide you with a temporary feeling of joy and relief. Hence, the term ‘comfort food’.

Common comfort foods

Common comfort foods include chocolate, cookies, ice-cream, potato chips, sweets and pasta, amongst others. Beverages can also be included in the list of comfort foods, such as hot chocolate and cool-drinks. Note that adding certain ingredients to foods and drinks can make them even higher in calories, for example, adding marshmallows to hot chocolate or extra cheese toppings to pasta.

Seek professional help

If you do not have a close friend or family member with whom you can talk about your issues, seek professional help. You need to find healthy ways of dealing and coping better with situations and problems. Don’t allow emotions to affect your eating habits. You can do this!
