Celebrity fitness guru Jillian Michaels called out Today weatherman Al Roker over his approval of keto diets – and has challenged him to a ‘civilised TV debate’.
Thanks to a flurry of New Year resolutions it has become the latest diet trend out there – and people can’t stop talking about whether it’s awesome or dangerous.
The restrictive diet is booming in popularity, with a growing number of people in the UK giving it a try.

Or is the keto diet dangerous in the long term?
Jillian seems to think it’s a terrible idea and was called out by celebrities figures, including presenter Andy Cohen and Roker, for saying it was ‘a bad plan’ not long after releasing her book The 6 Keys, which addresses the myths and misunderstandings associated with aging.
‘I have an idea…’ the author wrote to Roker and Cohen on Twitter last Friday.
‘How about a civil intelligent debate on The 6 Keys book and keto instead of personal attacks and name calling? I’m also a motivator and I know you guys can do this.’
She added to the weatherman in a video posted on ‘If you want to debate the science of keto, then, by all means, let’s do that.
‘But the personal attacks are bizarre, and unnecessary. It’s uncalled for, right. … I am here to discuss it with you.’
Standing firm she said on People’s TV back in May: ‘Do not go keto. Just work out, eat clean and don’t overeat. I promise you, balanced diet,’ she said.
‘It’s that simple.’
Jillian basically doesn’t like keto diets.
Experts have generally consented that the keto diet, while it wouldn’t be recommended for everybody, is generally safe.
Expert nutritionist and founder of Nosh Detox, Geeta Sidhu-Robb, explains it like this to Metro: ‘Renowned for its ability to source calories from protein and fats, as opposed to carbohydrates and sugars, in a bid to elevate weight loss and boost energy, the state of ketosis has been credited for aiding a range of health problems.
‘However it is not without its criticism, such as the safe longevity of the method. But what must be said is that the ketogenic diet is most definitely safe and is a viable dieting technique.
‘Before starting a keto diet its important to do your research – of your own body! It’s very important to examine your relationship with fats as a traditional ketogenic diet will have lots of them.’
