A new health study suggests that popular, low-carb diets like the Keto and Paleo diets may raise the risk of a variety of heart issues.
These diets help people lose weight quickly, but the study by the American College of Cardiology states that “people getting a low proportion of their daily calories from carbohydrates such as grains, fruits and starchy vegetables are significantly more likely to develop atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common heart rhythm disorder.”
These diets can also lead to strokes or heart failure.
“Quick weight loss can affect us long-term,” says nutritionist Laura Vetter.
People who are on the Keto diet will refrain from eating carbs. But this does not just mean not eating bread.
“Fruits, starchy vegetables and our grains,” Vetter says.
The Paleo diet – otherwise known as the caveman diet – consists of eating lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
Health experts say that anyone who is considering either of these diets should only do so under medical supervision.
But what about people who would like to lose weight and stay healthy?
“We should sensibly be taking in a little bit of every food group because every food group has a benefit for us,” says Vetter.
Vetter says that a well-balanced diet is the key.
